Website Maintenance Plans Explained: What You Get and What It Costs

What a website maintenance or care plan includes, what it should cost a small business in 2026, what is usually not included, and how to pick the right level.

A website is not finished when it goes live. Plugins and frameworks get security updates, contact forms stop sending, certificates expire, and your opening hours change. A maintenance plan (often called a care plan) is a monthly fee for someone to keep all of that under control.

This guide explains what a good plan includes, what it typically costs, what is usually excluded, and how to choose the right level for your business.

What a website maintenance plan should include

At minimum, look for these:

  1. Updates. Core software, themes and plugins kept up to date, tested so updates do not break the site.
  2. Backups. Regular backups stored somewhere other than the website server, plus a tested way to restore them.
  3. Uptime and security checks. Someone notices when the site is down or behaving strangely.
  4. SSL and domain checks. Your certificate and domain renew on time.
  5. Form and email testing. The contact form actually reaches your inbox.
  6. Small edits. A set number of hours for text, photo and price changes.
  7. A short report. What was done this month.

What is usually not included

  • New pages, new features or a redesign.
  • Writing new content or taking photos.
  • Hosting and domain fees, unless the plan says so.
  • Fixing a hacked site from before the plan started.
  • Paid plugin or software licences.

Read the hours carefully. "Unlimited small edits" often has a fair-use limit. A plan that states its hours clearly is easier to trust.

What website maintenance costs in 2026

Prices vary widely, and you will see quotes from about the price of a streaming subscription to several hundred dollars a month. The difference usually comes down to three things:

  • How complex the site is. A brochure site is simple. An online store or booking site has payments, stock and customer accounts that must keep working.
  • How many hours are included. One edit hour a month is very different from five technical hours.
  • Response time. Business-hours support costs less than a 24/7 emergency promise.

Which level do you need?

  • Simple informational site (a few pages, contact form): a basic plan with routine checks and about one hour of edits a month.
  • Active business site (regular updates, several services, a blog): a plan with a few edit and support hours.
  • Store or booking site (payments, bookings, customer data): a plan with more technical hours and closer monitoring, because downtime costs you sales.

Do it yourself, or pay for a plan?

You can maintain a simple site yourself if you are comfortable updating software, checking backups and testing forms every month, and you actually do it. The risk is not the first month; it is month eleven, when nobody remembered. If your site brings in leads or sales, a plan is usually cheaper than one bad outage.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. How many hours are included each month, and what counts as an hour?
  2. How often are backups taken, where are they stored, and when was a restore last tested?
  3. How fast do you respond, and during which hours?
  4. Who holds the logins? You should always have admin access to your own site, domain and hosting.
  5. Can I cancel, and what do I get when I leave? A fair plan hands over your backups and access without drama.

If a provider cannot answer these clearly, keep looking. A cheap plan that never restores a backup is worth nothing on the day you need it.

FAQ

How much should website maintenance cost per month?

For a small informational site, our plan starts at USD 49 a month (PHP 1,500 in the Philippines). Store and booking sites need more technical time; our plan for those is USD 249 a month.

Is hosting included in a maintenance plan?

Not in ours. Hosting is a separate yearly or monthly bill. Some providers bundle hosting into the plan, so compare the total.

What happens to unused hours?

Our monthly hours are for that month and do not roll over. If you regularly need more, a higher plan is better value.

Can you maintain a website you did not build?

Usually yes, after a quick check that we can access it and that it runs on a supported setup.

Do I need maintenance for a simple one-page site?

It still needs updates, backups and a working contact form. A basic plan keeps it healthy without much cost.
