Local SEO checklist for service businesses

If you serve customers in a city or region, local SEO decides whether you appear in the map results. Most of it is free and takes an afternoon.

The checklist

  1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile; choose the most specific primary category.
  2. Use exactly the same business name, address and contact details everywhere online.
  3. Create one page per main service, and mention the areas you serve in plain language.
  4. Ask real customers for reviews and reply to every review. Never buy or fake reviews.
  5. Add opening hours, photos and services to your profile and keep them current.
  6. Make sure your site is mobile-friendly, fast and on HTTPS.
  7. Add LocalBusiness structured data with true details only.
  8. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Measure

Check Search Console monthly for queries that mention your city or service, then improve the pages that already get impressions.
